2020-09-01 · PPGIS data was acquired from two surveys conducted by the local municipality: the Helsinki 2050 survey from 2013 and the National Urban Park Survey from 2017. The Helsinki 2050 survey was conducted in order to support the development of an upcoming general plan for the City of Helsinki ( Kahila-Tani, Broberg, Kyttä, & Tyger, 2016 ). In early work dating back to 2009, we developed public participation geographic information system (PPGIS) approaches for identifying the spatial distribution and intensity of social values for ecosystem services in the South Australian Murray-Darling Basin as perceived by community leaders in natural resource management (Figure 1). Strong believer that PPGIS will be of great help to harmonize and bring people together in co-creating and taking care of the public space.

In this study, we present a PPGIS method for spatially iden-tifying and assessing multiple elements of environmental justice (i.e., activity diversity, user diversity and PPUE) in popular areas by the water in Helsinki Metropolitan Area (HMA), with the goal of informing urban blue space design and management.
